What it is

Where the risk is liquid or gas and nothing else

BC powder is sodium bicarbonate rather than the mono-ammonium phosphate in an ABC unit. It knocks down a flammable liquid or gas fire quickly and it is gentler on equipment than ABC powder, but it does nothing useful on a Class A solid — it will put out the flame on a burning stack and the stack will relight from its own embers.

So this is a targeted unit, not a general-purpose one: a diesel day tank, an LPG manifold, a paint store, a pump house, a fuel dispensing point, a generator area. Where a space has both liquid and solid risks, the survey either specifies ABC or specifies both types with clear signage, because relying on whoever grabs the nearest cylinder to know the difference is not a fire strategy.

Supply, mounting, signage and the annual regime are the same as for any portable unit: sited on the approach to the risk, signed so it is found, checked annually, refilled after any use and hydro-tested on its cycle, with a record per unit under the maintenance contract.

Equipment

Sizes and what each one is for

Capacities we supply, and the risks each is normally set against. Placement is on the approach to the risk, never past it.

2 kgDispensing points, small fuel stores and vehicle-mounted duty.
4 kg and 6 kgPump rooms, generator areas, paint and solvent stores.
9 kgLPG manifolds, bulk fuel areas and loading points.
Trolley-mounted units25 kg and above where the spill area is larger than a hand unit can cover.
Wall brackets and floor standsMounted on the approach route, at the height the code expects.
Class-specific signageSigned for B and C risks, so a BC unit is not carried to a Class A fire.
Refilling and rechargingAfter any discharge, with the powder replaced rather than topped up.
Hydrostatic testingOn the required cycle, stamped and recorded against the unit.
