What it is

For the room nobody is in when the fire starts

A portable extinguisher needs a person. A lift machine room, a small DG room, a panel room, an electrical shaft or a store cupboard is empty almost all the time, and a fire there gets a long unattended run before anyone notices. A modular unit closes that gap: a cylinder fixed to the ceiling above the risk, with a thermal bulb in its own valve, discharging automatically when the air at the unit reaches its rated temperature.

It is not a substitute for a gas flooding system and it is not sized for a room — it is a local-application device sized against the object underneath it. That is exactly why it is useful, and why the survey matters: the unit has to be directly over the risk, at a height within its rated coverage, with nothing in the way of the discharge.

These are also the cheapest way to cover a scattered set of small unmanned risks across a building, which is the usual reason they get specified. Where a discharge needs to be known about rather than discovered, the unit can be fitted with a pressure switch and interfaced to the fire panel. We survey, supply, install and check them annually with the rest of the portable inventory.

Equipment

Types and duties

Selected by the agent the risk underneath needs and the volume the unit is rated to cover.

ABC powder modular unitsThe general-purpose unit for store rooms, shafts and small plant spaces.
Clean-agent modular unitsWhere the object below is electronic and a powder discharge would finish what the fire started.
2 kg to 10 kg capacitiesSized against the volume and the object, not against the room.
Thermal bulb release headThe unit’s own detector, rated for the temperature that space normally runs at.
Ceiling and wall mounting bracketsFixed directly over the risk, within the unit’s rated coverage height.
Pressure gauge and low-pressure switchLocal indication, and a contact so a discharged unit can be reported instead of found.
Fire panel interfaceVolt-free contact into the building system where a discharge has to raise an alarm.
Annual check and refillingGauge, bulb, bracket and clearance checked on the visit; refilled after any discharge.
