Rodent repellent systems

Ultrasonic and pulse systems for floor voids, cable trays and panel rooms — rodent damage to cabling is a fire risk, not a housekeeping complaint.

What it is

Rodents are one of the reasons electrical fires start

Rodents gnaw cable insulation, and they favour exactly the places a building hides its cabling: raised floor voids, ceiling plenums, cable trays, riser shafts, panel rooms and the space behind kitchen equipment. Damaged insulation is a short waiting to happen, and a short in a closed panel is one of the most common origins of an electrical fire. This sits under fire safety for that reason, not as a pest-control line item.

Ultrasonic and electromagnetic pulse systems make those voids uncomfortable rather than killing anything, which is what makes them acceptable in a data hall, a hospital or a food area where traps and poison are not. They do not clear an established infestation on their own — that is a pest-control job — and we say so rather than selling them as one. Their value is keeping a void that has been cleared from being reoccupied.

Coverage is the whole design. Ultrasound does not go round corners or through a floor tile, so units are placed per void and per compartment rather than one per room, with frequency sweep to prevent habituation. We survey the voids, lay out the transducers against the compartments, install and power them, and check them on the maintenance visit alongside the fire and security systems — together with the cable transits and gland seals, which are what the rodents used to get in.

Equipment

What the installation is built from

Coverage per void and per compartment. A single unit in the middle of a room protects the middle of that room.

Ultrasonic transducersPlaced per compartment — ultrasound does not turn corners or pass through a floor tile.
Electromagnetic pulse unitsFor wiring in conduit, trunking and wall cavities, where a transducer has nothing to radiate into.
Multi-frequency sweep controlVarying the frequency so rodents do not habituate to a steady tone and come back.
Floor void and ceiling plenum coverageUnder the raised floor and above the ceiling, which is where the cabling and the rodents both are.
Cable tray and riser shaft coverageAlong the vertical and horizontal routes rodents use to move between floors.
Panel room and kitchen back-of-house unitsBehind switchboards and equipment lines, the two places damage is found most often.
Cable transit and gland sealingClosing the way in. Repelling from a void with an open transit is half a job.
Power supplies and supervisionOn protected circuits with local indication, so a unit that has stopped is noticed.
