What it is

On a Class A fire nothing beats water for cooling

A fire in paper, timber, textiles or furniture is put out by taking the heat out of it, and water carries away more heat per litre than anything else on the trolley. On a deep-seated fire in a stack of records or a store of packaging, water soaks in and cools the mass — a powder discharge puts the visible flame out and the stack relights an hour later.

The constraint is obvious: water conducts, so it is not used where there is live electrical equipment, and it spreads a flammable liquid rather than covering it. That is why a water unit is specified area by area — a records room, a school corridor, a hotel linen store, a furniture showroom — with CO₂ or powder covering the electrical and liquid risks nearby, and signed clearly so the two are not confused.

Water units are also the cheapest to service and refill, which is worth knowing on a large site: a building fitted out entirely with ABC powder because powder is universal costs more to keep compliant than one specified properly area by area. We do that survey, supply and mount the units, and cover the annual check, refill and pressure-test cycle under contract.

Equipment

Sizes and what each one is for

Capacities we supply, plus the variants that widen where a water unit can be used.

6 litreCorridors, classrooms and offices where a 9 litre unit is more than the user can carry.
9 litreThe standard Class A unit for records rooms, stores, hotels and public areas.
Water mist unitsDe-ionised mist, usable near electrical equipment and safer in an occupied room than a jet.
Water with additiveImproved wetting and a higher A rating from the same body size.
Trolley-mounted units45 litre and above for warehouses, timber yards and stockpiles.
Wall brackets and floor standsMounted at the height the code expects, on the escape route rather than deep in the room.
Class-specific signageSigned for Class A and marked as unsuitable for live electrical equipment.
Refilling and hydrostatic testingAnnual check, refill after any use, and pressure test on the required cycle with the date stamped.
